Duties:
· Develop mass spectrometer instrument and technology
· Make scientific hypotheses, plan experiments to confirm or reject the hypotheses, collect and analyze data from experiments, and make justified conclusions
· Write reports on the results of experiments and studies
· Design and optimize ion sources, interfaces, ion optics for transporting ions, ion cyclotron resonance (ICR) traps for ion accumulation, excitation, fragmentation, detection of the ion cyclotron motion via induced current, and ion mass analyzing via fast Fourier transformation of the ion-induced current
· Design software to operate Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometers (FTICR-MS)
· Design hardware and software for mass spectrometry data acquisition and processing
· Develop mathematical basis for mass spectrometry data processing.
· Interpret mass spectral data
· Perform protein identification via searching mass spectral data against proteome/genome databases
· Lead a team for mass spectrometer control and data system development
Requirements:
o Analytical instrument development
o Solid knowledge of principles of operation and practice of utilizing biological mass spectrometers including FTICR-MS and QIT-MS.
o Understanding of physical and chemical processes involved in biological mass spectrometry including ion formation, ion/molecule reactions, ion transportation, isolation, fragmentation and analysis.
o Knowledge of principles of processing and separation of biological samples using chromatography followed by MS analysis
o Spectral data processing using fast Fourier transformation
o Designing and optimization of FTICR-MS
o Interpreting mass spectral data
o Experience with quantum-chemical calculations (Gaussian, GAMESS, HyperChem) and reaction rate calculations (RRKM/TST)
o Designing of MS instrument control, data acquisition and processing
o Proficiency in C++ programming
o Proficiency in C# .Net Windows and Web application development with ASP.Net and WPF
o Solid knowledge of modern software development methodologies
o PhD in Physics/Math/Microelectronics and related + 6 months experience (minimum)
